The Indian construction industry, as the second-largest employer in the country, plays a vital role in its economic landscape. Currently, the sector employs a staggering 71 million workers and contributes significantly to the economy. By 2030, it is projected that the industry will generate over 10 crore (100 million) jobs, underscoring its immense potential for employment creation. However, a major challenge lies in the skill gaps present within the workforce.
A significant portion, about 81%, of the current workforce is unskilled, with only 19% comprising skilled employees. This discrepancy poses a concern that needs immediate attention.
Technological advancements in the construction industry have led to increased productivity, further fueling the demand for skilled workers. To address this, there's a growing need for developers, construction companies, and consulting firms to invest in skilled manpower. The National Skill Development Council (NSDC) estimates that 87% of the overall workforce in the construction sector is absorbed by the real estate sector, while the remaining 13% is absorbed by the infrastructure sector. Out of the total construction workforce, 4.4 million are core skilled employees, including engineers, technicians, and clerical staff, while 6.9 million are vocationally trained.
The industry is not only a critical employment generator but also a key contributor to the country's economy, with the output from India's real estate sector predicted to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030. This growth trajectory emphasizes the importance of enhancing the quality of skilled employment in the sector, as it holds the key to harnessing its full potential for robust economic growth and meeting employment targets.
